There is sometimes the temptation to think of technology enhanced learning tools in terms of online virtual classes; however, they can of course be used within standard classes. Teaching in any classroom environment can be challenging, but when the class gets quite large it can be all the more challenging to create a lively, engaging and interactive environment.
However, there are a range of tools that can help the teacher to create a lively and interactive environment in the classroom even when the class size goes above fifty. That said, the tools and strategies in this micro-course can be usefully employed regardless of the class size. In this micro-course, we will look at tools and strategies that offer the teacher and the students working in groups the opportunity to brainstorm, map concepts, reflect and reach decisions. Trying to gather concepts from groups of students into an accessible and manageable format can at times be difficult, what we need is some way of capturing disparate ideas and presenting them into that everyone in the class can see and contribute to (AndersonInman & Horney, 1996). Regardless of the tools used, the emphasis should be on the their use in a manner that encourages the class members to work collaboratively.
